pohutukawa

pohutukawa

as the knight fights the snail,

one hemisphere changes ever so pale.

winning the battle in the marginalia,

the snail takes on monkeys and rabbits;

a treasonous, un-chivalrous, usurious orchestra.

leaves fall in color shaking the cold,

turn the page and warm the southern world.

vibrant in the highest sublime throws,

a simple doctrine ancient and true,

such is life’s trials as earth smiles and knows.

basking in the sun beneath rocky cliffs,

vibrant red stamens bloom evergreen,

when expected the fall of the leaf in winter’s grief.

pohutukawa trees bring red flowers to remember,

drama from wood of the heart in summer’s december.
